More than one in four children in Washington, DC households experience food insecurity – their families lack money consistently to buy the food they need – the fourth highest rate nationwide. But here is the irony: child nutrition programs are underutilized. Families often don’t know about them, are unsure how to access them, or encounter bureaucratic roadblocks. DC Hunger Solutions educates the public about District hunger, poverty, and obesity; expands understanding of food deserts (neighborhoods without full-service grocery stores); and promotes awareness of, and access to, federal nutrition programs. It works closely with city government to make sure that food policies are effective and collaborates with community partners to coordinate resources. Since 2002, it has catapulted DC from 20th to 3rd in the nation for the number of students starting the day with school breakfast. Together we can end hunger in our nation's capital.
