Our neighbors who live with daily injustice – injustice rooted in poverty, disability, and discrimination – are the least likely to have the resources they need to defend their rights. NLSP locates its offices in neighborhoods where they are needed most, offering free civil legal services to low-income DC residents. Approximately 90% of NLSP clients are African American and live in Wards 5, 7, and 8, which are also the Wards with the lowest incomes in the District. Staff lawyers fight for tenants housing rights; protect domestic violence survivors from their abusers; help job seekers eliminate unfair barriers to employment and other services. Providing educational seminars in nontraditional places like public libraries provides services to clients who might otherwise be missed. And at every opportunity, NLSP joins with other community stakeholders to advocate for policies that uphold justice for our neighbors in need.
