  • Volunteer Opportunities / Responsibilities: TUTORING
    Tutoring for youth takes place in the evening at our Sullivan House shelter. Volunteers will be paired with a specific child and commit to attending for one hour, one day a week, for at least two months.

    Middle and high school students often need tutoring in a specific subject, such as English or algebra. Younger kids may need help with reading, math, or completing their homework. Tutors help improve our kids’ skills and build the confidence they need to be successful academically and socially.

    Occasionally, tutors are needed to assist adult clients who are studying for a certification or working to improve their English language or computer skills. Participants may also seek assistance with job applications, resumes, and interviewing preparation.

    COMMUNITY OUTREACH/EVENTS
    Help Bridges to Independence connect with the community by planning and promoting upcoming activities, organizing drives for food or other items, and representing Bridges at gatherings around town. Are you part of a church, business, or other community organization? It’s easy to set up a drive or a fundraising activity to benefit Bridges, and we’re happy to help!

    Bridges events are a great opportunity for you to bring your friends and family to volunteer! Events include the KW Acts Bridging the Gap Gala, Arlington Turkey Trot, Bridges’ Black and Gold Bash, and our annual SAFE AT HOME Kickball Tournament. Lots of volunteers are needed to make these events a success!

    BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB
    Boys and Girls programs are Bridges’ young ladies’ and young men’s groups which meet weekly for an evening of connection, empowerment, sisterhood/brotherhood, and fun. Youth are empowered to identify their interests, tackle challenges, and envision a brighter future for themselves. In addition to the weekly meetings, each participant is paired with a mentor and role model from the community who will provide ongoing support and encouragement. Girls meet every Tuesday and Men meet every Thursday from 6-7. Male volunteers are especially needed.

    CHILD CARE
    Our adult clients often attend classes here at Bridges or at nearby Christ Church of Arlington on Saturdays. Volunteers are needed to keep clients’ children happy and entertained so their parents can focus on learning. Hang out with them in the children’s room where you and the kids can read, play games, or watch a movie.

    ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANCE
    Bridges to Independence relies on the support of volunteers to assist with letter writing, data management, graphic design, and other miscellaneous tasks. Administrative volunteers typically come in during weekday work hours.
