General Information
- Volunteer Opportunities / Responsibilities: CAIR Coalition's Long-Term Volunteer Opportunities
Detention Hotline:
Through the detention hotline, volunteers provide assistance to detained immigrants by connecting them with CAIR Coalition staff and private attorneys and by providing information about their individual legal case. Interested individuals should sign up for a virtual hour-long training on our website.
Translation & Interpretation Opportunities:
Volunteer translators and interpreters help us ensure individuals can meaningfully participate in their legal case, regardless of the language they speak. Translation opportunities include translation of court documents such as birth certificates, declarations, letters of support, and news articles. Interpretation opportunities include interpreting calls between CAIR Coalition attorneys and clients/family members/witnesses, as well as interpreting psychological or medical evaluations. No certification is required to be a translation/interpretation volunteer, but strong fluency in the language is required.
Jail Visits:
Please note that, in light of COVID-19, all in-person jail visits *and jail visit trainings* are on hold. CAIR Coalition staff continue to maintain contact with individuals in immigration detention remotely, but volunteer participation in jail visits will not resume until it is safe for staff, volunteers, and clients to resume in-person visits. All volunteers who fill out our volunteer signup form will receive an update once CAIR Coalition has determined that it is safe to resume in-person visits to the detention centers. - Types of Volunteers Needed: individual/adult; individual/college; adult groups of less than 5; adult groups of 6 or more, including corporate teams
- Hours Needed: business hours during the week
