Lucky Dog rescues dogs and cats in need, ensures that they are vaccinated and spayed/neutered, and finds them loving, forever homes … all through a foster-based, volunteer-powered system. A team of five paid staff trains, mentors, and manages more than 1,500 volunteers who pitch in however they can: transporting animals from rural shelters, coordinating adoption events, assisting with marketing and fundraising, providing foster homes, and much more. Foster parents learn each animal’s comforts, fears, and character traits, and this information is used to ensure the best possible adoption match. More than 13,000 dogs and cats (yes, cats too) have been rescued in the nine years since Lucky Dog’s founding in 2009, including hundreds retrieved in the wake of natural disasters. Your support relieves underfunded, high-kill shelters, curbs overpopulation, brings joy into thousands of homes and hearts … and saves lives.
Application, pre-approval, and contract completion have all moved online. Huge, in person Sunday adoption events, where some 30 animals were typically adopted each week (the bread and butter of the adoption program), were halted and adoption events became virtual -- and streamed live on Facebook. Adopters also began meeting animals virtually via FaceTime or Zoom. Transports – which orchestrated the arrival of dogs and cats from high kill shelters – have been revamped. Instead of everyone gathering for an arrival, people now park and are called to the van one-by-one to collect their new family members.
