At 5.8%, DC’s unemployment rate remains well above the national average; but in Southeast Washington, a staggering 32% of young adults are either unemployed or not in school. So Jubilee Jobs has a big job to do – and in 36 years, it has helped nearly 26,000 impoverished individuals obtain secure employment. Some have sizable gaps in employment history; some have no history at all. Jubilee Jobs guides applicants through the process of applying, interviewing, securing and retaining a job. Participants are also encouraged to move beyond entry-level employment by pursuing additional training or education. In 2015, executive director Terry Flood was named a Washingtonian of the Year, and with good reason: last year alone, 569 people secured positions thanks to Jubilee Jobs, including more than 300 struggling with homelessness or returning from incarceration. Work for sustenance, dignity, and hope: it's a journey worth pursuing – and supporting.
