General Information

  • Volunteer Opportunities / Responsibilities: Our primary volunteer opportunity is through the Canal Stewards program. This is a bi-monthly event at which we engage volunteers in outdoor restoration projects, clean-ups, and invasive species removal. These take place at the River Center at Lockhouse 8 along the C&O Canal and at Fletcher's Cove in Washington, DC.

We also participate in 4 nationally recognized watershed events over the course of the year where we engage volunteers in trash and invasive plant removal from the Potomac’s Shoreline. These events take place in various locations in Maryland, DC and Virginia.

Target audiences for these volunteer programs include families with school-age children, adult naturalists, and green consumers.

    Other Opportunities:
We are seeking Volunteer River Center Guides to help maintain and staff the River Center at Lock 8 in the C&O Canal National Historical Park, provide information to park visitors, promote the river protection activities and programs of the Potomac Conservancy and lead occasional education activities for park visitors.

Each Fall we hold our Growing Native program where we ask volunteers to gather seeds in their own backyard, participate in a public seed collection, or help spread the word about this important conservation program by serving as a Growing Native representative at community events. Training is provided.
