Last yearís numbers say it all: 30,146 visitors; 285,000 pounds of food; 10,425 volunteer hours. Whether a person is homeless, living on disability, elderly and needy, or just struggling to make ends meet, the Columbia Baptist Spend Yourself Food Pantry sends a clear message: come and you will be fed. Founded in 1980 to offer canned goods to just a few families, it has since expanded to provide bread, fresh produce, frozen meat, and other groceries to some 145 Fairfax County families each week. No referrals are required, and in an environment of dignity and respect, volunteers greet many clients by name. And clients can contribute too: they assist in the pantry, and are welcome to help grow herbs and vegetables in the on-site garden. This impressive operation is run entirely by volunteers and, thanks to the generosity of Columbia Baptist Church and other partners, 100% of revenue is used to purchase food. Demand increases each year, but the Food Pantry is committed to feeding everyone who comes. Letís make certain that continues.
