As the first African-American Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, The Right Rev John Thomas Walker took to heart his parents' core belief that education is the door to opportunity. That same belief is at the heart of the Anacostia-based school that now bears his name. The Bishop John T Walker School for Boys nurtures the spiritual, intellectual, social, physical, and artistic development of boys in pre-K through 5th grade. In addition to its rigorous academic program, the tuition-free school provides boys of all faiths with three meals a day, an extended day program (7:30am to 6pm) and 11 months of academic, cultural, and recreational activities – an essential combination given that 50% of children East of the River live below the federal poverty line. Parental involvement is critical to the boys’ success too, and 92% of parents attend student-teacher conferences, a strong indicator of engagement. The boys may face an uphill battle, but they won’t face it alone. You can help turn boys into young men whom Bishop Walker would have been proud to know.
