Five Talents International offers a hand up to thousands in Africa, Asia, and Latin America through micro-enterprise development and business skills training. A faith-based organization that serves people of all faiths, Five Talents targets underserved communities in which people are unable to get traditional loans or access other banking services. The average loan size is $56 – quite small by US standards – and the businesses that the loans help to start are simple: sewing, soap making, automobile repair, brick-making, and farming. About 76% are headed by women, whose participation in the program means they can pay for things like school fees and emergency medicine. Week-long sessions on business planning, marketing, and accounting can attract hundreds, many of whom walk 5-6 hours a day to get there. Last year, Five Talents financed nearly 30,000 microloans benefiting more than 78,000 entrepreneurs and their families. On average, each loan creates one job; each job supports six people; each loan repaid with interest is loaned again. After all, treasure is meant to be multiplied.
