General Information

  • Volunteer Opportunities / Responsibilities: Fairfax CASA volunteers advocate for the best interests of children have been found to be abused or neglected by the Fairfax Juvenile & Domestic Relations Circuit Court. Every child with an open case is appointed a CASA volunteer. All CASA volunteers undergo extensive training; no prior experience in child welfare or the law is required. The duties and responsibilities of a CASA volunteer on a case include the following:
    • Visiting each child assigned in the case at least twice monthly and making other contacts as necessary.
    • Completing an intensive independent review of each case.
    • Reporting findings to the court and ensuring representation of the child’s best interest.
    • Monitoring the case following a court hearing or decision as designated by the court.
    • Communicating regularly with the Guardian at litem assigned to the case.
    • Participating in ongoing training, and a minimum of 12 continuing education hours annually after the first year.
    • Attending an annual face-to-face evaluation session with the volunteer supervisor.
    • Participating in regularly meeting case conference with the volunteer supervisor to review progress on the case.
    • Participating in other meetings as necessary.
