More In The News …

(We’re doubling up on the news-front this week. Comment away with any additions.)

Soaring Poverty Casts Spotlight on ‘Lost Decade’ (New York Times): “Another 2.6 million people slipped into poverty in the United States last year [...] and the number of Americans living below the official poverty line, 46.2 million people, was the highest number in the 52 years the bureau has been publishing figures on it [...] Joblessness was the main culprit pushing more Americans into poverty, economists said. Last year, about 48 million people ages 18 to 64 did not work even one week out of the year, up from 45 million in 2009.” And when it comes to the jobs bill, could these bleak figures make a case for or against it?

How to Get Money For Your H Street NE Business (DCentric): “DC has just unveiled the application for a grant program that gives money to new or existing retail businesses along the H Street NE corridor. There’s about $1.25 million available for the program, and the first wave of applications is due by October 26 [...] Longtime businesses can apply to the grant, as long as the money isn?t for liquor stores, barbershops, hair salons, phone stores, bars or restaurants.” On a related note, you can learn more about Catalogue non-profits serving the H Street area right here.

Women in the World Foundation Launch (The Daily Beast): “Today we celebrate the launch of a new venture from Newsweek and The Daily Beast — our Women in the World Foundation [...] There are so many NGOs working with women, so many causes that need help. How to sort through it? How to decide where the greatest impact can be made? And how to foster collaboration between them to become a force multiplier? It was clear to us that what was needed was an umbrella organization that would promote and propagate all the innovative work.” You can check out the Women in the World Foundation news channel here and search for Catalogue nonprofits dedicated to women and girls over here.
