Volunteering!

All day Saturday, the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia will be training teaching volunteers for the ESOL Learning Centers or Family Learning Program; email volunteers@lcnv.org to sign up. Or from 10:00 AM to noon, join the “Weeding Divas” of Earth Sangha for a round of invasive plant removal at Marie Butler Leven Preserve; a team from George Mason University’s Circle K International will also be working away at Rutherford Park in Fairfax.

Music & Dance!

Catch the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra’s Masterworks Concert #1 with guest conductor William Boughton and Karina Canellakis, violin on Saturday at 8:00 PM George Mason University’s Center for the Arts. Also at 8:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Sunday, PEARSONWIDRIG DANCETHEATER comes to Dance Place with the world premiere of “Sayonara, Dear;” tickets right here. On Sunday at 6:00 PM, Bowen McCauley Dance will be a featured company at a preview event of Dance Around DC at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage.

Explore the potential for development around Branch Avenue Metro station in Prince George’s County on a walking tour with the Coalition for Smarter Growth; meet at the metro on Saturday at 10:00 AM. That evening at 6:30 PM, Building Bridges Across the River @ THEARC and their community partners will host their annual Gala; if you were lucky enough to nab tickets before the event sold out, have a great evening. You also can catch Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County at Gaithersburg Day from noon to 5:00 PM on Sunday and celebrate the complete renovation of the Friendship Terrace at Seabury Resources for the Aging from 1:30 to 3:30 PM.

Join a free energy saving class at the Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery Country and learn how to control of your energy expenses on Saturday from 10:00 AM to noon. And on Saturday at 11:00 AM, wish a very happy 40th Anniversary to Washington Youth Garden and celebrate at the US National Arboretum. At 5:00 PM, Northern Virginia Conservation Trust will honor Jean R. Packard, the former Chair of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, for her years of dedication to land conservation at their September Showcase at Green Spring Gardens in Alexandria.
