Around Town: June 4-5

Welcome to the first weekend of June! Where would you like to spend it?

… at the theatre?

Encore Stage & Studio’s final production of the season, Jack and the Magic Beans, begins this weekend and you can expect another awesome all-kids cast. The dark comedy The B-Team returns to the District of Columbia Arts Center for a second weekend … with a a crew of second-string terrorists from Buffalo, NY. And last but not least … don’t miss the world premiere of Bootcandy (“a kaleidoscope of sassy lessons in sex education”) at Woolly Mammoth!

… on the dance floor?

You are in luck! Dance Place launches “DanceAfrica, DC 2011,” this weekend, including a marketplace, free outdoor dancing, and evening performances — celebrating the movement and music of the African Diaspora. You can also celebrate spring with Joy of Motion Dance Center, whose annual youth spring dance recital is this Sunday (three different shows in one day!).

… in the community?

DC SCORES brings their spring season to a rocking conclusion this Saturday, when over 800 students will join in a round-robin tournament at Trinity University (face-painting, crafts, and games included as well). And in just one hour, you can get acquainted with the great people of L’Arche of Greater Washington through stories of their life together (please call for tour directions). On Saturday night, join Alexandria Seaport Foundation for a delicious summer wine-tasting and explore the boat-building workshop. And on Sunday, the Arlington Outdoor Education Association hosts the 6th Annual Whitlows on Wilson Celebration: food, music, and silent auction in Arlington!

… out in nature?

Guess what? Saturday is National Trails Day and you spend it with Potomac Conservancy; volunteers are needed to help restore areas of the C&O Canal towpath near the River Center at Lock 8. The Northern VA Therapeutic Riding Program also hosts its annual Ride to Thrive Horse Show, a memorable opportunity for riders with disabilities. Or meet the Fairfax County Stormwater Management for a tour of stream conditions along the Route 1 Corridor with the Coalition for Smarter Growth — dress for the outdoors!
